Real Talk with Judge Dawson
Cycle breaker Leadership Principle number four is "Be Patient!" Success in life, achieving goals, staying out of jail all can be related back to the discipline of patience. There are so many examples of people who were on the verge of success but decided that they could wait no longer. There are many examples of people in Court who are on the verge of a positive outcome like a reduced sentence, a lower fine, a release from jail but they derail the opportunity do to a lack of patience.
During many of my workshops I tell the story of R.U. Darby, a young man who moved to the west coast of America to seek fortune in the mining and gold industry. He found an opportunity, made arrangements, and left his family in hope of striking it rich. He even bought the necessary equipment. Did he get rich? No, because he didn't have patience. His first lack of patience was demonstrated by the fact that he bought equipment but didn't learn or educate himself in the most successful and efficient way to mine for gold. His second display of the lack of patience occurred as he was working. He dug and dug but couldn't find any gold. Meanwhile people nearby him were striking it rich left and right. Darby gave up. He Sold his equipment and prepared to leave town. The man he sold his equipment to was ready and patient. This man had spent years studying all about mining. His only problem had been that he couldn't afford the equipment. However, he was patient and knew that there would be an opportunity where all of his patience would pay off. Along comes Darby, frustrated and impatient and practically gives his equipment away. Once the man went to work he struck gold a became a millionaire very shortly. Darby was devastated.
Another example of how the lack of patience can derail your goals is one closer to home. A man in my Court recently was adamant that he didn't do anything wrong. He went to trial and even though I felt very compassionate for his situation, based on the evidence, I found him guilty. Nevertheless, in the spirit of fairness I was prepared to do something really nice for him in regard to his fines and cost. Just as I picked up my pen he blurted out "this is some BS!" He actually used the curse words. My bailiffs asked if I wanted to hold him in contempt of court. I said no, he had just missed his opportunity. His lack of patience in trying to achieve his result costs him an opportunity for relief from the court. How many times do we forgo opportunities based on our lack of patience? To be a leader, to be a Cycle Brekaer we have to tap into the ability to use patience as a tool for success. Cycle breaker Leadership Principle number four is "Be Patient!"
